UPDATE: Local organizations are mobilizing to bring Christmas cheer to Vallejo with the 17th annual “Christmas in the Crest” toy drive and block party on December 20, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Kings Supermarket. This urgent community event aims to provide joy and support to children in one of the city’s most diverse areas.

The Neighborhood Hope Dealer and Help Others Prosper Eternally (HOPE) are leading this initiative to ensure that no child is left without a gift this holiday season. “We just want to give a Christmas to children who absolutely have nothing,” said Word Smith, Founder of Neighborhood Hope Dealer. “It’s just been story after story year after year.”

This year, attendees can look forward to exciting new features, including bouncy houses and an innovative sports zone offering inflatable football, basketball, and soccer activities. Families will also enjoy visits from beloved holiday characters like the Grinch and surprise appearances from local legends, enhancing the festive atmosphere.

Local leaders emphasize the importance of community engagement. “It’s always a great vibe, great music,” said Jameelah Hanif, Founder and CEO of Watch Me Grow Inc. “People can come out and feel safe and enjoy the community.” Organizers collect toys throughout the year to maximize their impact and reach families in need.

At its core, this event is about more than just distributing toys. “It’s about a block party where we bring the spirit of Christmas to the neighborhood. It’s love,” Smith explained. This year’s event will include not only toy giveaways but also music, raffles, and opportunities for parents to win prizes.

The collaborative effort involves local organizations and community members, fostering a sense of belonging and connection. Smith highlights that the success of this initiative relies on engaging local talent, stating, “The DJ was from the neighborhood, the artists were from the neighborhood, and everything came together like pieces to a puzzle.”

As the team prepares for this year’s event, Smith emphasizes their commitment to building lasting relationships within the community. “It’s not just about coming to give away toys and then leave — that’s kind of toxic charity,” he noted. Instead, they focus on ongoing engagement that leads to mentoring and additional community support throughout the year.

The toy drive and block party serve as a culmination of these year-round efforts. “Come Christmas Eve, we’ll be bringing joy one toy at a time,” Smith stated. “The key is love, just loving each person and showing them we care.”

Residents of Vallejo are encouraged to participate in this heartwarming event, ensuring that every child can experience the joy of Christmas in the Crest. As excitement builds, organizers are preparing for what promises to be a memorable day filled with community spirit and holiday cheer.
