URGENT UPDATE: The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) has intensified security measures at construction sites in Altadena, California, following the devastating Eaton Fire nearly a year ago. As the community embarks on a significant rebuilding effort, local law enforcement has launched a new Construction Check Program to protect valuable building materials and equipment from theft.
With hundreds of active construction sites across Altadena, the LASD is committed to ensuring that the progress continues uninterrupted. Capt. Ethan Marquez of the LASD Altadena Station emphasized the importance of safeguarding these sites, stating, “We know that after crews leave, things are often left on site. We work with contractors so they know what steps they can take to reduce theft and protect homeowners.”
The urgency of this program arises from the vulnerability of construction sites, particularly during evenings and weekends when materials may be left unattended. Deputies assigned to the program will conduct targeted patrols and investigate any suspicious activity. “If we see someone with a truck who looks like they might be doing work—especially at night or on the weekend—we’re going to check it out and make sure they’re supposed to be there,” Marquez added.
For families like the Markarians, who are eager to return to their newly rebuilt home, the enhanced patrols have provided much-needed peace of mind. “We’ve noticed the sheriff patrol constantly here,” said Minas Markarian, an Altadena resident. “That makes a big difference.”
Community members are also taking proactive measures to protect one another. Many residents have installed construction fencing, cameras, and lighting in poorly lit areas to deter potential thieves. “Some of our neighbors added cameras and lights because the street gets extremely dark in the evening,” Markarian noted.
In a positive sign, Altadena’s crime rate is currently at its lowest level on record, a trend that law enforcement officials hope to maintain as more families return to the area. The LASD’s initiatives, including increased visibility and community awareness, are already yielding results. “We’ve had family friends checking on the house, and neighbors have questioned them,” Markarian shared. “We appreciate that. We want to know that everyone here is here for a good reason.”
The Construction Check Program is expected to remain in effect as long as construction activity continues in Altadena, emphasizing both safety and a shared sense of responsibility among residents dedicated to rebuilding their community.
As the LASD continues its efforts, the collaboration between law enforcement and the community serves as a vital reminder of the strength that comes from working together during challenging times. Community vigilance is proving essential in safeguarding the future of Altadena, where the sound of rebuilding resonates with hope and resilience.
