UPDATE: Lake Central senior offensive lineman Matthew Kafka is on a mission to become the top player in the Duneland Athletic Conference, just announced in a powerful statement during practice on August 7, 2025. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 290 pounds, Kafka is determined to elevate his team and his own performance to new heights.
“I want to be regarded as the top of the top, the top of the DAC, and make my team better,” Kafka declared. As he enters his third season as a starter, his leadership and commitment to excellence have never been more evident.
The offensive lineman has been hard at work in the offseason, gaining 15 pounds and improving his strength significantly. Kafka’s bench press has surged from 250 to 325 pounds, while his squat has jumped from 475 to 550 pounds. “I’m able to move great with it, but I’m also really able to get much better push and shove on guys,” he stated.
Kafka’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. Lake Central coach Pete Koulianos expressed high hopes for his performance this season, emphasizing Kafka’s versatility and leadership skills. “He’s one of the strongest kids in our program. He’s a student of the game,” Koulianos added.
Last season was challenging for Kafka due to a right calf injury that sidelined him for part of the season. “I wasn’t at 100%. It was a struggle to deal with,” he reflected. However, Kafka is now fully healthy and ready to take on the season as a key player at guard.
His teammate, senior guard Will Sandoval, echoed the sentiment, saying, “He’s a leader of the O-line. We’re all really close, and he’s a big part of that.” Their bond off the field, shared through activities like golfing and dining, contributes to their on-field chemistry.
As Lake Central prepares for the upcoming season, Kafka’s aspirations are high. The team has not posted a winning record since 2014, but Kafka is optimistic. “Always, 100%, the goal is to go to state, win state. I feel like we can win,” he asserted.
