BREAKING: Two United States service members and an American civilian interpreter were killed during a brutal ambush by a lone Islamic State gunman in central Syria on July 15, 2023. The attack, which also left three other service members injured, took place near the historic city of Palmyra, confirming ongoing threats from ISIS in the region.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has officially confirmed the casualties, stating that the attacker was “neutralized” during the engagement. In a statement, CENTCOM reported, “Two U.S. service members and one U.S. civilian were killed, and three service members were injured, as a result of an ambush by a lone ISIS gunman in Syria.” The identities of the fallen have not been released pending notification of their next of kin.

The civilian victim was identified as an interpreter who was working closely with the troops. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth responded strongly on social media platform X, declaring, “Let it be known, if you target Americans — anywhere in the world — you will spend the rest of your brief, anxious life knowing the United States will hunt you, find you, and ruthlessly kill you.”

The ambush occurred while the soldiers were engaged in a “key leader engagement” as part of ongoing counter-ISIS and counter-terrorism operations in the region. The wounded personnel were quickly evacuated by helicopter to the Al-Tanf garrison, an American base situated near the borders with Iraq and Jordan.

This incident marks the first American casualties in Syria since the fall of President Bashar Assad a year ago, a significant shift in the region’s dynamics. In the aftermath, diplomatic relations between the United States and the interim Syrian government led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa have improved, with al-Sharaa recently visiting Washington.

Despite suffering defeat on the battlefield in 2019, the Islamic State remains a pervasive threat. The United Nations estimates that the terror group still retains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters across Syria and Iraq, primarily operating through sleeper cells and showcasing their enduring capabilities.

As the situation develops, the focus will shift to how U.S. officials respond to this attack and the broader implications for American military operations in the region. This tragedy underscores the persistent danger faced by American forces and highlights the unresolved threat posed by ISIS.

Stay tuned for updates as authorities respond and more details emerge regarding the victims and the ongoing military operations in Syria.
