Nikki and Mike Ashkar’s bakery, Mav’s Top Buns, located in New Jersey, has sold more than 500,000 cinnamon buns since its inception.

The Ashkars began their journey baking Nikki’s grandmother’s famous cinnamon buns, but they never envisioned building a thriving business. “We went from selling cinnamon buns from a U-Haul truck to making over $1 million in about a year,” Nikki revealed. The couple now produces up to 1,000 buns daily, especially during peak weekends.

The secret to their success? Nikki harnessed the power of social media. Since starting their Instagram account in 2020, they have gone viral multiple times, leveraging engaging content that resonates with their audience. One of Nikki’s posts garnered 80,000 likes and sparked a surge in followers.

Nikki noted, “When you believe something so intrinsically about your product, you become that,” underscoring the importance of branding in their strategy. They chose the name Mav’s Top Buns to honor their son, Maverick, and positioned their product as the “best cinnamon buns in New Jersey.”

Despite the high price of $10 per bun, the Ashkars ensure quality with a meticulous baking process. The dough rests for 72 hours before baking, and each bun is generously frosted with a special vanilla bean and cream cheese blend. “We ice every single nook and cranny, so that you never miss a good bite,” Nikki emphasized.

Juggling entrepreneurship and parenthood has been no small feat. Nikki opened the bakery while eight months pregnant, managing the demands of three children alongside her business. “I think that’s what people really grabbed onto,” she shared, explaining how customers resonate with their family’s hard work.

Nikki also revealed, “Sometimes we’d lose power and we’d roll buns by candlelight.” Moments like these have solidified their commitment to the business, proving that perseverance is key.
