UPDATE: The excitement for the 2024 high school football season is palpable as teams prepare to kick off their campaigns in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa-Foothill Division. With key matchups approaching, here’s what fans need to know about the top contenders and their immediate outlook.

Piedmont Hills leads the pack, boasting a strong roster under first-year coach Kelly King Jr.. After an impressive 9-3 record last season, King steps in after guiding Leland to a championship. The Pirates will rely on the talents of Alijah Torres, last year’s league running back of the year, and standout wide receiver Travis Linane. Defensively, all-league selections Diego Arias and Nico Quetania will anchor a unit that only allowed 14 points per game last season. Their season opener is August 29 at Monte Vista Christian at 7:30 p.m.

In second place is Pioneer, led by coach Eric Perry. The Mustangs, who finished with a 5-5 record last season, are primed for a comeback. Senior quarterback Braeden Ries returns after throwing for 1,140 yards and seven touchdowns. With key targets like Josh Fisher and Sam Natividad, they aim to turn close losses into victories. Their first game is also on August 29 against Aragon at 7:30 p.m.

Overfelt, with coach Carlo Maningo, comes in at third. After a 5-6 record last season, they face a rebuilding challenge but return all-league defensive tackle Kingston Tagaloa. The Royals will kick off their season on September 5 at Hillsdale at 7:00 p.m.

Silver Creek, coached by Eric Luescher, looks to establish a strong running game with top backs Jordan Thompson and Tyler Nguyen. They also have a formidable offensive line led by Cameron Williams. The Raiders’ season opener details are yet to be announced.

Meanwhile, Oak Grove aims to improve after struggling with a 1-9 record last season. Coach Joel Cordero believes a step down to the Santa Teresa-Foothill Division will allow the Eagles to rebuild. Senior quarterback Jordan McCoy will be crucial in leading the offense. Their first game is set for August 28 at Milpitas at 7:00 p.m.

Finally, Del Mar, under coach Robert Chapman, had a promising last season with a 6-4 record. Despite losing several key players, they have a strong offensive line and look to junior Eli Lenihan for leadership at quarterback. The Dons will open their season on August 29 against Harbor at 7:30 p.m.

With the season kicking off soon, anticipation builds as these teams prepare for fierce competition. Fans can expect thrilling matchups and standout performances from their favorite players. Stay tuned for updates as the season unfolds!
