URGENT UPDATE: Torrential rain has unleashed devastating flooding in and around Beijing, leading to at least 38 fatalities as of Tuesday. Emergency services are actively engaged in rescue operations amid ongoing threats of landslides and additional flooding, with conditions expected to remain critical into the evening.

Heavy rainfall has inundated the region, particularly impacting the Miyun District, which recorded staggering precipitation levels of over 54 centimeters (21 inches). The deluge has not only claimed lives but has also disrupted power supply to more than 130 villages and left critical infrastructure in ruins.

In a statement from Premier Li Qiang, the government recognized the “serious casualties” and has mobilized additional resources for rescue efforts. The flooding has forced the evacuation of over 80,000 residents, including approximately 17,000 people from Miyun alone, according to city officials.

The situation escalated rapidly on July 11, 2023, when heavy rains triggered landslides in Hebei Province, claiming the lives of four individuals, while CCTV reported that eight others were initially reported missing. Emergency crews are on high alert as further landslides have been noted in the affected areas.

Witnesses describe scenes of destruction in towns like Taishitun, where uprooted trees and submerged streets paint a grim picture of the aftermath. As rescue operations continue, officials emphasize the need for safety and preparedness in light of the ongoing risk.

Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant as conditions evolve. The city’s flood risk remains elevated, and teams are working tirelessly to restore power and clear blocked roads.

As this situation develops, further updates are expected. Stay tuned for more breaking news on this urgent crisis as rescue efforts unfold.
