URGENT UPDATE: Fuel prices in Halifax County remain elevated despite a significant drop in averages across the nation, leaving local residents frustrated. Current data from AAA reveals that the national gas price average sits at $2.84 as of Friday, while North Carolina’s average is $2.68. In stark contrast, Halifax County residents face an average price of $2.86 per gallon.

While the national average has decreased from $2.89 last week and $3.07 a month ago, Halifax County’s prices remain stubbornly high. Neighboring counties offer cheaper alternatives: Edgecombe County at $2.62, Nash County at $2.73, and Warren County at $2.74. Across the Virginia state line, prices average $2.80 in Greensville County, $2.79 in Brunswick County, and $2.66 in Mecklenburg County.

Residents are voicing their concerns, pointing to significant price disparities. Some gas stations in Tarboro are charging as low as $2.36, while prices in Rocky Mount range from $2.58 to $2.59. Membership warehouse chains like Costco and Sam’s Club, lacking in Halifax County, often sell fuel at lower prices due to their unique pricing models.

Scott Aman, president of New Dixie Oil Corp., which operates multiple stations in Halifax County, has faced public scrutiny regarding pricing. When asked about the reasons behind higher fuel costs, Aman explained, “We sell top-tier branded fuels with the best additives,” emphasizing that various factors including supplier costs, taxes, delivery, and competition heavily influence prices.

According to Aman, the fuel pricing landscape is complex and can fluctuate dramatically. “Cost is a constant roller coaster,” he stated, indicating that competition can temporarily reduce prices, but they eventually stabilize. He noted that significant players like Sheetz, Murphy, and Speedway also affect local pricing.

In a move aimed at enhancing options for motorists, a new 7-ELEVEN is set to open on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway in Roanoke Rapids, replacing the former Carolina BBQ and Chicken restaurant. This location is frequented by travelers along Interstate 95 looking for fuel and convenience items.

Sheetz, which operates nearby, promises competitive pricing across its network of locations. Nick Ruffner, Sheetz Public Affairs Manager, stated, “Fuel pricing can vary by region due to a number of factors, including transportation and supply costs.” He emphasized their commitment to providing value to customers, although he did not disclose specific pricing strategies.

As local residents feel the pinch of higher fuel costs, Aman acknowledged the confusion and frustration that pricing discrepancies create. “Every market may be different,” he said. “We make every attempt to compete in every market.”

With residents eagerly awaiting potential price adjustments in Halifax County, the situation remains dynamic. Observers will closely monitor upcoming developments as the new 7-ELEVEN opens and competition intensifies.
