BREAKING: Greater Regional Health has just approved nearly $500,000 in critical purchases aimed at accommodating its rapid expansion. The board of trustees convened on Monday to finalize three significant capital expenditures that will enhance hospital operations and improve patient care.

The first major investment includes new firewalls for the hospital’s data servers, addressing urgent capacity issues that have plagued the facility. Network and Systems Analyst Ryan Cook reported that the existing firewalls, installed in 2020, are reaching their limits. “Everything we do anymore is over internet connections,” Cook stated, emphasizing the need for improved throughput to prevent system failures. The upgrade, costing approximately $358,000, includes a management console and three years of tech support, with potential funding covering up to 65% of the costs through the Universal Service Administrative Co. program.

Chief of Staff Matthew Epp highlighted the productivity boost expected from the new system, projecting a 5-10% improvement across the hospital’s workforce. “This will significantly enhance our operational efficiency,” Epp noted, as the hospital’s 450 staff members will benefit from a faster and more reliable connection.

In addition to the data infrastructure upgrades, the board approved the purchase of new Nox Medical sleep study base stations and home devices for just $111,314. Respiratory Therapy Director Katy Brown explained that these new tools are essential for both in-lab and at-home sleep testing, which has seen increased demand. “We see about 20 in-lab tests and 25-30 at-home tests each month,” Brown stated. The new equipment will allow for enhanced data collection, crucial for diagnosing sleep disorders effectively.

The third purchase focuses on updating flooring for the Medical Arts Plaza. Chief Clinic Officer Carol Eckels presented the plan, which includes replacing flooring at a significantly reduced cost of $28,534, down from an estimated $45,000. This upgrade will improve the hospital’s aesthetics and functionality.

These investments come at a pivotal time as Greater Regional Health continues to expand its services and improve patient care. The board’s decisions reflect a proactive approach to addressing current challenges and preparing for future growth.

As Greater Regional Health moves forward with these essential upgrades, stakeholders and community members can anticipate a more efficient and effective healthcare environment. With funding sources in place and a commitment to quality care, the hospital is poised for continued success.
