BREAKING: Gene Olaf Johnson, aged 85, of Charles City, has passed away peacefully on November 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving children. This tragic news comes as the community mourns the loss of a beloved father and friend.
A funeral service for Johnson is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, November 10, 2025, at Hauser Weishaar Funeral Home in Charles City. The service will be officiated by Sister Diana Blong, with burial set to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home, offering family and friends a chance to pay their respects.
Born on August 27, 1940, to Lawrence and Kathryn Johnson, Gene was a lifelong resident of Charles City. He married Christina “Chris” Emerson on November 26, 1966, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, sharing a deep bond that lasted until her passing. Gene dedicated his career to the automotive industry as a GM mechanic at Bissonnette’s Chevrolet and later drove semi for Anthony Bill Trucking.
Gene’s passion for the outdoors was evident in his hobbies; he loved hunting, fishing, and camping with his family. Above all, he cherished the time spent with his wife and took immense pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His family includes four children: Gina Meyer of Phoenix, Arizona, Lon (Sarah) Johnson of Thornton, Iowa, and Dawne (Brad) Bilharz and Jacqueline Johnson, both from Charles City. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Johnson was not only a family man but also served in the Floyd County Sheriff’s Reserves under Sheriff L.L. Lane for many years, showcasing his commitment to the community. His passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of those who knew him.
Gene is preceded in death by his beloved wife Chris, his parents, and several brothers-in-law. His legacy will continue through the many lives he touched.
