URGENT UPDATE: Garden experts are urging homeowners to start planting immediately, despite common advice to wait until spring. With summer still in full swing, now is the perfect time for planting, according to Tim Johnson, senior director of horticulture at the Chicago Botanic Garden.
New reports confirm that many gardeners, like Hal Peterman from Elgin, feel pressured to delay planting until next spring. However, experts stress that summer planting can yield excellent results if done correctly. “There’s no reason to stop planting during the summer,” Johnson asserts. “In fact, I have always had good results with my summer plantings.”
Garden centers are reporting a robust selection of container-grown plants, trees, and shrubs available for immediate planting. These plants are often dug in late winter or early spring while dormant, ensuring their readiness for summer installation. However, experts caution that proper care is essential during this hot season to ensure successful growth.
Watering is critical during these months. Newly planted trees and shrubs, especially balled and burlapped varieties, need about 1 inch of water per week. Watering by hand at the base of the plant is recommended, as sprinkler systems may not adequately hydrate the root ball.
Johnson notes that the growing medium of containerized plants dries out more quickly than garden soil, necessitating more frequent watering—potentially twice a week during heat waves. “Keep the plants moist before planting to minimize stress,” he advises.
The implications for homeowners are significant. Delaying planting could result in missed opportunities for vibrant gardens and essential greenery. Johnson emphasizes that with the right care, summer planting can thrive, transforming backyards into lush, inviting spaces.
