galena-police-department-launches-k-9-unit-with-new-partner-storm

UPDATE: The Galena Police Department has officially reintroduced its K-9 unit, partnering Officer Riese Federman with a new dog named Storm. This exciting development follows a generous $20,000 donation aimed at enhancing community safety and police capabilities.

Storm, a young Belgian Malinois and German shepherd mix, has already begun to make an impact since his arrival in March. “It’s just rewarding to see him grow,” said Federman, who has been with the department for two years. The duo completed an intensive five-week training program at Jessiffany Canine Services in Iron Ridge, Wisconsin, where they learned critical skills for various police deployments.

Federman is the first officer in two years to work with a K-9 partner after the retirement of former officer Devin Halstead and his dog Hektor in May 2023. “With Officer Federman, Storm is a fairly young dog, and she’s still working with him to build him up to what Hektor was,” said Galena Police Sgt. Keith Brandel. This new partnership is crucial, as K-9 units serve as powerful deterrents in escalating situations.

Since May, Storm has been deployed roughly six to seven times on traffic stops and has participated in four or five building searches and perimeter checks. “He’s ready to go downstairs all the time,” Federman mentioned, highlighting the constant readiness required of a police K-9.

The $20,000 donation not only covered Storm’s purchase and training but also includes provisions for food and veterinary services, funded by the city of Galena. The department already had a K-9 police car from previous operations, ensuring a seamless integration for Storm.

Both Federman and Storm are required to maintain 16 training hours per month alongside annual certifications, ensuring they are always prepared for the demands of the job. “It was very eye-opening, as well as a lot of hard work,” said Federman, reflecting on the challenges and rewards of K-9 training.

Bringing back the K-9 unit is a significant boost for the Galena Police Department, enabling them to assist other law enforcement agencies in the region. Brandel emphasized the value of having a working K-9, stating, “They’re an outstanding asset and an awesome tool for any department to have.”

As Officer Federman and Storm continue to build their partnership, the community can expect to see an enhanced police presence and a renewed commitment to safety in Galena. The department urges residents to support their local law enforcement as they embark on this vital mission together.
