UPDATE: Four individuals are confirmed dead following a tragic boat crash near San Diego. The incident involved a small wooden vessel likely carrying migrants attempting to reach the U.S. shores, according to the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard responded to the wreckage, reported around 11:40 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2023, near Seacoast Drive in Imperial Beach. Rescuers managed to save five people from the site, with four requiring hospitalization. One survivor was handed over to the Department of Homeland Security for further processing.

Initial reports indicated that six people were discovered on the beach, including one individual trapped beneath the overturned boat. Tragically, another victim was pronounced dead at the beach. Shortly thereafter, a bystander alerted authorities to a body found in the water near Imperial Beach Pier, approximately three miles north of the Mexican border. Coast Guard personnel subsequently recovered three additional deceased victims from the water.

“Our crews and partner agencies responded immediately, but this case demonstrates the severe risks posed to migrants attempting to enter the United States by sea in unstable vessels,” stated Coast Guard Capt. Robert Tucker.

Reports from survivors indicate that they are predominantly Mexican citizens, though some identities remain unverified. The Coast Guard continues its search operations for any additional victims who may have been aboard the small boat.

The tragedy unfolds during a period of severe weather in Southern California, where a strong storm has brought heavy rains, leading to flash flood and mudslide warnings. The churning seas have compounded the dangers faced by those attempting to cross the border by water.

As the situation develops, authorities urge individuals to consider the life-threatening risks involved in such perilous journeys. The Coast Guard remains on high alert, highlighting the ongoing challenges of maritime migration in the region. More updates will follow as rescue efforts continue.
