UPDATE: A devastating traffic crash in St. Petersburg has left one man dead and several others injured. The incident occurred on December 27, 2025, at approximately 9:30 PM at the intersection of N Frontage Road and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street North.

Investigators confirm that a silver Mitsubishi Outlander was traveling northbound with a green light when a blue Dodge Charger, driven by 31-year-old Izell Shelby, sped through a red light, colliding with the Mitsubishi. Shelby was found heavily entrapped in his vehicle and was rushed to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Mitsubishi and her three passengers also sustained injuries but are reported to have non-life-threatening conditions. The scene of the crash was chaotic, with emergency responders quickly working to assist the victims.

Before the collision, St. Petersburg police had observed Shelby driving recklessly along Gandy Boulevard. An officer attempted to initiate a U-turn to pursue him but did not chase after the Charger, instead alerting other officers to be on the lookout for the vehicle. Reports indicate that Shelby had previously struck another vehicle on Gandy Boulevard before continuing westbound.

Authorities are emphasizing that speed and a lack of proper safety belt use are likely contributing factors in this tragic incident. Moreover, it has been revealed that Shelby was operating with a suspended Florida driver’s license due to a failure to appear in court relating to a prior driving offense.

This crash highlights the ongoing concerns about reckless driving and its dire consequences. As the investigation unfolds, officials are urging the community to stay alert and prioritize safety on the roads.

The incident remains under investigation as officials gather more details. The police have not yet released further information about the conditions of the passengers in the Mitsubishi or any additional developments.
