UPDATE: Emergency flights have been diverted from Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) amid alarming threats of a “laser tag” event aimed at federal aircraft in South Portland. The call to action, posted by a local anarchist group, has raised serious safety concerns, prompting air ambulance providers to reroute their helicopters.
Authorities confirm the online flyer encourages participants to disrupt federal helicopters with laser lights, urging them to disguise their identities and erase potential DNA traces. As a result, multiple air ambulance providers declined to land at OHSU’s rooftop helipad on Saturday night, with patients now facing an additional travel time of 45 to 60 minutes by ground ambulance.
“This delay could have significant impacts for unstable trauma patients, STEMIs, and strokes,” OHSU warned in a statement to KGW. The hospital is urging the public not to engage in this “extremely dangerous” activity, which could jeopardize lives.
In response, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated, “Aiming a laser pointer at an aircraft is a federal crime. This is incredibly dangerous for aircraft personnel and public safety.” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin emphasized that federal officials are committed to combating actions by “domestic terrorists.”
The Portland Police Bureau confirmed that pointing lasers at aircraft is prohibited under state and federal law and noted ongoing monitoring of the ICE facility, where protests against federal immigration enforcement have been frequent. No laser strikes were reported that night.
Despite the chaos, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek downplayed the situation, asserting, “There is no insurrection,” while expressing confidence in local law enforcement.
The uptick in federal and military activity over Portland has been acknowledged by the Port of Portland, which stated it cannot control these developments. The recent incidents highlight a rising trend of violence faced by federal agents, as noted by Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons during an appearance on ‘The Big Weekend Show.’
Portland has become a focal point for protests against federal actions, with demonstrators often using provocative props. The recent call to action has alarmed both local and federal officials, as the potential for harm escalates.
As this situation unfolds, emergency response teams are urged to remain vigilant. The community is called upon to refrain from participating in these dangerous activities, as the impact could be life-threatening.
