UPDATE: Early voting for the highly anticipated Democratic and Republican primary elections in Victoria County has officially begun today, February 27, 2024, at the Patti Dodson Public Health Center. Voters have a critical opportunity to shape the upcoming election, with polls open until March 3, 2024.

The early voting period runs from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the first week, with extended weekend hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Starting Monday, voting hours will shift to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily until the final day of early voting on February 27.

Texas operates as an open primary state, allowing registered voters to choose between the Democratic and Republican primaries without declaring a party affiliation beforehand. This flexibility is crucial as voters select which party’s ballot they wish to cast.

Key federal races on the ballot include nominations for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House District 27. Additionally, several statewide offices are up for grabs, including the positions of governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and comptroller. Notably, incumbent Republicans Lois Kolkhorst (Senate District 18) and AJ Louderback (House District 30) are unopposed in their primaries.

Local elections are also significant, featuring positions such as county judge, district clerk, and county commissioners. Both parties will present voters with proposition questions, with the Republican ballot including 10 propositions and the Democratic ballot containing 13.

Voters are encouraged to review the nonpartisan voter guide published by the League of Women Voters of Texas, which includes candidate responses for key races. The guide is accessible at vote411.org.

To participate, voters must present an approved form of photo identification. Acceptable IDs include a Texas driver’s license, Texas election identification certificate, U.S. military identification card, or a U.S. passport.

This early voting period is a vital step in the electoral process, impacting the choices that will be available on Election Day, March 3, 2024. As voters head to the polls, their decisions will shape the political landscape for months to come.

Stay tuned for updates as results begin to emerge from this pivotal election cycle.
