UPDATE: The annual MLK Classic at Monroe High School just wrapped up with thrilling victories for both Dougherty and Monroe, showcasing intense competition in Albany, Georgia.

The day kicked off with the girls’ games before transitioning to boys’ matchups, culminating in a nail-biting 46-44 win for Dougherty over the Valdosta Wildcats and a 68-58 victory for the No. 7-ranked Monroe Golden Tornadoes against Early County. The event, hosted by Monroe’s basketball program and booster club, delivered high-stakes action despite a cancellation of the Lee County vs. Bible Baptist game due to transportation issues.

Monroe head coach Michael Hoffpauir expressed satisfaction with the overall event, stating, “The day went well. I think we had great matchups that made each game competitive.”

The first boys’ game saw Dougherty facing off against Valdosta. Dougherty managed to hold off a late surge from the Wildcats. Valdosta’s Jake Reid opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, but Dougherty’s Mikel Roberts quickly responded. The teams exchanged baskets throughout the first quarter, with Dougherty leading 14-13 after one.

In the second quarter, Dougherty began to pull ahead. Roberts sank another 3-pointer, and freshman Ernest Townsell contributed with a key shot from the top of the key, stretching the lead to 20-14. They entered halftime with a commanding 29-18 lead and kicked off the third quarter with a 7-0 run, doubling the score to 36-18.

Valdosta rallied after a timeout, scoring nine unanswered points and cutting the lead to 38-31 by the end of the third. Tension mounted in the final minutes as Valdosta tied the game at 42-42 with just over three minutes left. However, Dougherty’s David Burgess quickly regained the lead, hitting a crucial shot in the lane. His subsequent free throw with 13 seconds remaining sealed the win for Dougherty. Eight different Trojans contributed to the scoring, with Roberts leading with 10 points.

The Golden Tornadoes of Monroe wrapped up the day’s boys’ games with an impressive 68-58 victory over Early County. Monroe jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead thanks to strong performances from Tristen Terry and leading scorer Brayden Burns, who finished with 26 points. Early County fought hard, repeatedly narrowing the gap, but Monroe consistently responded, maintaining their lead throughout.

Despite the challenges of the day, including the cancellation of one game, the MLK Classic proved to be a resounding success, filled with competitive spirit and community engagement. Fans and players alike left the gym buzzing from the day’s excitement, eager for the next matchup.

The MLK Classic continues to be a pivotal event in the local basketball season, showcasing young talent and fostering community spirit. As the teams head into the next phase of the season, all eyes will be on Dougherty and Monroe to see if they can maintain their momentum.
