As summer heat intensifies, dermatologists are stressing the importance of sunscreen for those spending time outdoors. Dr. Charles Miller, an assistant medical director and dermatologist at Kaiser Permanente, highlights the risks associated with sun exposure during this season, especially for individuals who work or play outside.
Beachgoers like Jeffery Zimmerman and Sadie Zimmerman acknowledge the struggle of remembering to apply sunscreen. “Sometimes I’m good and I remember sunscreen,” said Jeffery. “Sometimes I will choose not to wear it, but I do end up regretting it later on,” added Sadie. Their experiences reflect a common dilemma faced by many during summer outings.
Understanding Sun Risks
Dr. Miller emphasizes that it is crucial for everyone, particularly outdoor workers such as lifeguards and construction workers, to protect themselves from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. “In our area, we have a very high ultraviolet index on a scale of zero to 12, often exceeding 10 or 11,” he noted. Extended sun exposure can lead to not only cosmetic issues like wrinkles and dark spots but also serious health risks, including skin cancer.
To mitigate these risks, Dr. Miller recommends using sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. He advises applying it before heading outdoors and reapplying every two hours while in the sun.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen
Dr. Miller also suggests considering sunscreens that contain zinc oxide, as they provide enhanced protection. He mentioned an emerging theory that layering a chemical sunscreen followed by a zinc-based one may offer added benefits.
Beachgoers echo Dr. Miller’s advice, emphasizing the importance of skin protection. Haley Whitehead, another beach enthusiast, shared her perspective: “It’s always important to protect your skin. It’s not worth it to get a little extra sunburn for what you’re going to be in pain anyway.” The discomfort of sunburn, she notes, often leads to peeling and the loss of a tan, making the effort to apply sunscreen worthwhile.
As summer continues, awareness about the significance of sunscreen remains pivotal. Dr. Miller’s insights serve as a reminder to take precautions against the sun’s harmful effects, ensuring that outdoor activities remain enjoyable and safe.
