URGENT UPDATE: Coastwise North Devon has just unveiled its thrilling new spring program, marking 20 years of dedication to marine conservation. Kicking off today, January 8, 2023, the first event takes place at Barnstaple Library from 10 AM to 12 PM, featuring renowned underwater photographer Paul Naylor.
Naylor will deliver a captivating talk titled “Dropping in on the lives of our amazing marine animals,” showcasing the unique marine life of the North Devon coast, including the fascinating tompot blennies. His mission is to inspire attendees with the wonders of UK marine life, a goal shared by Coastwise’s year-round activities.
This new program is not just about learning; it’s a call to action for the community. Coastwise chair Liesje Birchenough emphasizes the importance of understanding the challenges facing marine ecosystems due to climate change and coastal management issues. “North Devon’s rocky shores and wildlife are the main focus,” she said. “There are opportunities to develop interests, participate in citizen science, and join shore visits.”
The program features a variety of talks and activities. On January 22, Elizabeth James, a PhD student, will discuss the impact of electromagnetic fields on female shore crabs. Additionally, Robert Down and the Nicholls family will share their “Members’ Shore Stories” in the following week, highlighting local coastal narratives.
Later in January, on January 29, Professor Richard Twitchett from the Natural History Museum will present on “Reading the rock record: mass extinctions and climate change in Devon.” The program also includes a trip to Horsey Marsh in Braunton on February 26 to observe local birdlife, meeting at Velator Car Park at 10 AM.
Coastwise offers a membership for £20 covering 10 sessions, or individuals can attend talks for £3 each. This initiative is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in coastal ecology and marine conservation.
For those intrigued by marine life, Coastwise North Devon is the go-to organization. Founding member Paula Ferris encourages everyone to join, stating, “If you have ever been intrigued by a rock pool, you should join us.”
