URGENT UPDATE: The Chicago Police Department (CPD) has just announced the promotion of James Labbe as the new commander overseeing detectives investigating serious crimes in downtown Chicago and the North Side. This critical appointment comes as the city grapples with rising crime rates and seeks to enhance public safety.

As of Friday, October 13, 2023, Labbe, a veteran of the CPD since 2001, steps into this pivotal role following the retirement of former commander Rodney Hill. Labbe previously served as lieutenant of property crimes in Area 3, where approximately 200 detectives are assigned to tackle some of the city’s most pressing criminal issues.

This leadership shift is particularly significant given the recent challenges faced by the department. In the interim period, Lt. Sam Cirone managed detective operations in Area 3. Cirone has a controversial history, including involvement in a 2004 incident linked to a fatal assault involving a relative of former Mayor Richard M. Daley. Despite being recommended for a year-long suspension, he received only a reprimand from the Chicago Police Board in 2019.

Labbe’s promotion signals a fresh direction for the department as it aims to restore public confidence and enhance investigative capabilities. Known for his dedication, Labbe is also an active member of the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve and has a background as a U.S. Army reservist.

In addition to Labbe’s appointment, CPD Superintendent David Brown announced the promotions of Evelynna Quarterman to Deputy Chief of the Administration and Support Division, and Sheamus Mannion to commander of the Central District (1st), emphasizing a comprehensive effort to strengthen leadership within the department.

As this development unfolds, community members are keenly interested in how Labbe’s leadership will impact crime rates and public safety initiatives in the city. The CPD will be closely watched as it adjusts to new leadership and addresses the pressing challenges facing law enforcement today.

This leadership transition comes at a critical time, and officials have underscored the importance of swift and effective crime response strategies. As Labbe takes command, residents remain hopeful for a proactive approach to violent crime and a renewed commitment to community engagement.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops and impacts the neighborhoods of downtown and North Side Chicago.
