UPDATE: In an impressive display of skill and determination, Carson Melendy of Fallon finished in second place at the Sierra Nevada Classic and the Rollie Lane Invitational, solidifying his reputation as one of the region’s top wrestlers. The two-day tournament, held at the Reno Events Center on January 29-30, saw Melendy compete fiercely at 165 pounds, helping the Greenwave secure a remarkable 19th place out of 92 teams.

Melendy’s performance at the SNC was particularly noteworthy as it marked his first defeat of the season, following a strong run of victories. He finished the tournament with a record of 5-1, including a technical fall and three consecutive pins before narrowly losing to Sebastian Garcia from Junipero Serra in the championship match. Just days later, Melendy faced off at the Rollie Lane Invitational in Nampa, Idaho, where he again showcased his talent. After a series of decisive wins, he concluded the tournament with a 9-8 loss in the final match.

The stakes are high for Melendy this season as he aims for his fourth state title in his final year of high school wrestling. Earlier this month, he had to miss competitions due to illness, making his recent performances even more impressive.

Fallon is gearing up for more action, hosting Fernley for a dual match on Wednesday and preparing for the Steave Deaton Memorial in Minden this weekend. Melendy’s achievements have not only highlighted his individual prowess but also uplifted the entire team, with several other wrestlers putting forth strong efforts.

At the SNC, fellow competitors included Wyatt Lambert, who finished 3-2 at 157 pounds, and Manuel Barros, who also posted a 3-2 record at 113 pounds. Their contributions, alongside Melendy’s, were pivotal in maintaining the team’s competitive spirit. The Greenwave is in the midst of a rigorous season, battling through deep brackets and high expectations.

The girls’ wrestling lineup from Fallon also showed promise at the SNC, although they fell short of podium finishes. However, they bounced back at the Sparks Invitational, where Peyton Heckman won her weight class at 145 pounds with a 2-1 record. Saraphine Luna and Tabitha Brockelsby each secured second place finishes, while Bailey Prinz earned third place at 140 pounds.

As the wrestling season heats up, Melendy’s journey and the Greenwave’s collective efforts are drawing attention. The team’s resilience and determination to succeed are palpable as they strive for excellence in upcoming competitions.
