UPDATE: A Newark bus driver has been recognized as a ‘Star of the Month’ for his outstanding efforts in promoting mental health awareness among his colleagues and the community. Leigh Barker of Stagecoach East Midlands received a commendation certificate and a £100 Love2Shop voucher for his pivotal role in championing the charity Andy’s Man Club.

The recognition comes as mental health remains a critical issue, with Barker’s advocacy encouraging open conversations about men’s mental health. His commitment to the cause has been highlighted in multiple nominations, where colleagues praised his relentless efforts to keep mental health at the forefront of discussions within the workplace and beyond.

One colleague stated, “I would like to nominate Leigh for his ongoing work in raising awareness of mental health… by his persistence in getting two buses branded up to promote the Andy’s Man Club message that it is #ITSOKAYTOTALK.” Another added, “He has done absolutely outstanding work promoting men’s mental health through his work with Andy’s Man Club. Well done, Leigh.”

In early 2025, Stagecoach East Midlands wrapped two of its vehicles with Andy’s Man Club branding, further solidifying the partnership aimed at ending the stigma surrounding men’s mental health. The charity offers free, peer-to-peer support groups across the UK and online, emphasizing the importance of conversation in mental health recovery.

Matt Cranwell, managing director of Stagecoach East Midlands, expressed pride in Barker’s work, stating, “I know that he has pushed the subject of mental health extremely hard and that his passion has encouraged others to get involved or seek assistance.” He added that the partnership with Andy’s Man Club has inspired other Stagecoach operating companies to engage in similar initiatives.

Barker’s commendation reflects the values of Stagecoach, including community support and collaboration. The impact of his efforts resonates not only within the company but also within the wider community, encouraging others to prioritize mental health conversations.

As mental health awareness continues to be a pressing issue, Barker’s recognition shines a light on the importance of advocacy in everyday workplaces. His actions exemplify how individuals can make a significant difference in promoting positive mental health, urging others to join the conversation and support one another.
