To address the high euthanasia rates of feral cats, the Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter (VBAS) have introduced a program aimed at finding homes for these animals in nontraditional environments. The initiative, known as the *Barn Cat Program*, seeks to place what the shelter refers to as “working cats” into barns, warehouses, backyards, and similar settings where they can help control rodent populations.

The VBAS emphasizes that these cats are feral by nature and not suited for indoor living or personal companionship. As stated in a recent release, “These are not housecats. They are feral and are perfectly content to live in their barn, yard, or working area and will avoid human contact.” While there are occasional instances of feral cats becoming comfortable around humans, such cases are rare.

The program ensures that each cat is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and delivered by VBAS volunteers to a working home. Upon arrival, the cats are initially housed in kennels to help them acclimate to their new surroundings. Adopters are responsible for providing ongoing food, water, and shelter, while the cats contribute by managing local pest issues.

Addressing the Challenge of Feral Cats

Many animal shelters prioritize adopting out domestic and socialized pets, leaving feral cats in precarious situations. According to VBAS, “Sadly, the overwhelming majority of feral cats brought to shelters are euthanized because there are not enough working homes for them.” The Barn Cat Program aims to reverse this troubling trend by pairing feral cats with diverse environments, such as barns, stables, and even vineyards, where they can live independently.

Currently, the shelter has several working cats ready for adoption, highlighting an urgent need for suitable outdoor or industrial spaces. Those interested are encouraged to consider this unique arrangement, which not only saves lives but also supports natural pest control.

VBAS volunteers provide initial materials and guidance to assist with the transition of the cats into their new homes. Interested individuals can learn more about participating in the Barn Cat Program by reaching out to the shelter at [email protected].

The initiative represents a compassionate approach to managing feral cat populations while offering a practical solution for communities facing rodent issues. By promoting the adoption of working cats, the VBAS is not only helping these animals but also fostering a greater understanding of the role feral cats can play in a balanced ecosystem.
