UPDATE: Atlanta Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos announced on Saturday that the search for a new manager is underway, but he has yet to compile a list of candidates. This follows the decision of Brian Snitker, who will not return after a successful 10 seasons with the team, including leading the Braves to the 2021 World Series championship.
Despite the news being anticipated, Anthopoulos emphasized the importance of allowing Snitker to finalize his transition before initiating any interviews. “I wanted to give him the time he needed,” Anthopoulos stated, highlighting the respect for Snitker’s contributions. The former manager will remain with the organization as a senior advisor and is set to be inducted into the Braves’ Hall of Fame next season.
The Braves’ management is facing a competitive landscape, with multiple teams seeking new leaders. Anthopoulos revealed, “Before Skip Schumaker was named [Texas Rangers’ manager], there were eight openings. That makes it incredibly challenging.” The urgency is palpable as Anthopoulos aims to make a hire as quickly as possible due to the high demand for managerial talent across Major League Baseball (MLB).
While no candidates have been officially interviewed yet, speculation is swirling around potential successors. Former Braves catcher David Ross, who has expressed interest in the role, remarked that managing the Braves “would be amazing.” Additionally, two current coaches on Snitker’s staff, Walt Weiss and Fredi González, both bring managerial experience to the table.
Anthopoulos confirmed, “We do not currently have a list,” emphasizing the need to handle internal matters before focusing on the managerial search. However, he acknowledged that the timeline for hiring could be influenced by other teams vying for the same candidates. “You’d love to be able to do it sooner than later,” he noted, underlining the urgency of the situation.
Snitker leaves behind a legacy marked by a record of 811-688, ranking third in franchise history for wins, trailing behind legends Bobby Cox and Frank Selee. His leadership facilitated seven postseason appearances, including six NL East titles.
As the Braves prepare for a new chapter, fans and analysts alike are eager to see who will take the helm next. The coming weeks will be critical as Anthopoulos navigates this complex hiring landscape, aiming to secure a leader who can continue the franchise’s success.
