UPDATE: Berkeley marks a significant milestone today as it celebrates the 98th anniversary of the iconic Tupper & Reed music store, which opened its doors on September 1, 1925, at 2271 Shattuck Ave. This historic “music house” is recognized for its unique architectural style and rich cultural contributions to the community.
The grand opening featured a live performance by Mme. Raegan Talbot alongside the Horace Heiet Orchestra, captivating attendees with an evening of musical entertainment. The Berkeley Daily Gazette reported that the public was invited to explore the “beautiful and artistic store,” showcasing a vast array of musical instruments and phonographs.
The architectural design, led by W.R. Yelland, deviated from conventional retail spaces, resembling an “old-world dwelling” rather than a modern storefront. A striking gable roof of imported English slate and a towering 45-foot chimney adorned the building, topped by a life-size figure of a piper, further enhancing its charm.
Inside, the store combined retail space with a second-floor tea room, aptly named “The Sign of the Piper,” where customers could enjoy meals and refreshments. This unique blend of music and hospitality contributed to the store’s lasting legacy within the community.
