UPDATE: The Benicia High Panthers delivered a powerful performance, defeating the Vacaville Bulldogs 58-39 in a decisive nonleague basketball matchup on December 19, 2023. The game showcased a stunning second-half surge that left fans buzzing with excitement.

In a thrilling showdown, the Panthers, now 8-2 for the season, initially led 24-16 at halftime. However, they quickly escalated their game, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to start the third quarter. Sophomore guard Ella Lum shined brightly, netting a game-high 25 points, including 14 points in the second half alone.

“I think the difference there was energy,” Lum said after the game. “We came out flat at the beginning, but our defense improved, leading to a lot of steals off our press.” Her contributions were crucial as the Panthers aimed to build momentum heading into the holiday break.

Despite the loss, Vacaville’s sophomore post Charlie Cook made a strong impression, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Cook’s remarkable 10-for-11 performance from the free-throw line highlighted her determination, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Benicia’s relentless defense.

Benicia coach Corey Ott commented on his team’s defensive adjustments, stating, “(Vacaville) shot 27 free throws. We focused on moving our feet and taking proper angles in the second half.” His squad responded effectively, holding the Bulldogs without a field goal in the second quarter, while Vacaville managed to stay competitive by capitalizing on free-throw opportunities.

The first half was tightly contested, with Vacaville briefly leading 7-6 after a three-point play from Cook. However, Benicia countered with swift scoring, pushing the lead to 12-9 by the end of the first quarter. The Panthers’ dominance continued into the second, as they extended their lead to 24-16 at halftime.

In the crucial third quarter, Lum was instrumental, scoring six of her team’s 11 points during an explosive 11-2 run. As the fourth quarter unfolded, Benicia maintained a substantial lead, growing it to 46-27, effectively sealing their victory.

Pleased with Lum’s performance, Coach Ott noted her ability to involve teammates: “Without her on the court, we wouldn’t have that point guard, and not as many touches would be there.” Her pivotal role was evident, and her leadership on and off the court remains an asset for the Panthers.

Looking ahead, Benicia will face a challenging Diablo Athletic League matchup against Northgate on January 6, 2024, aiming to carry their momentum into league play. Coach Ott emphasized the importance of maintaining their strong preseason performance, stating, “We are going to grind you. It’s not going to be fun, but we need to get into better shape, rebound better, and defend.”

Meanwhile, Vacaville will strive for redemption in their upcoming game against West Park on December 22, 2023, before beginning Monticello Empire League play against rival Will C. Wood on January 9, 2024.

The excitement of high school basketball continues, and both teams are poised for a competitive season ahead.
