URGENT UPDATE: A devastating avalanche has struck a group of 15 skiers on a backcountry trip in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Frog Lake, California, leaving 9 individuals missing. The incident occurred on January 30, 2024, amidst severe winter storm conditions.
The skiers, led by Blackbird Mountain Guides, were on a three-day expedition in the remote wilderness when they were caught by the avalanche while returning to the trailhead. Six skiers have been rescued after seeking shelter for hours as crews contended with blizzard conditions to reach them.
Authorities report that the group had been enjoying a guided experience in the backcountry, known for its challenging terrain and deep snow. The expedition was tailored for intermediate-to-expert skiers, capable of climbing up to 2,500 vertical feet (760 meters) each day. Participants were advised to carry their own ski equipment and avalanche safety gear, including beacons and shovels.
In an official statement, Blackbird Mountain Guides confirmed they are working closely with rescue teams to locate the remaining nine skiers. “We are coordinating with authorities on the rescue operation,” the company stated. The area where the avalanche occurred had been designated as a closed zone to the public for a century before being opened for guided tours.
The avalanche watch was initially issued on Sunday, January 28, as a powerful winter storm swept through the region. The Sierra Avalanche Center subsequently raised this to a severe avalanche warning for the Central Sierra Nevada, including the Greater Lake Tahoe region, beginning at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, with large slides anticipated.
In the past 24 hours, the town of Soda Springs recorded over 30 inches (76 centimeters) of snowfall, contributing to dangerous and unstable snowpack conditions. Strong winds and rapid snow accumulation have made the terrain increasingly hazardous, prompting concerns among outdoor enthusiasts and safety officials.
As the rescue efforts continue, families and friends of those missing are anxiously awaiting updates. The emotional toll on the community is palpable, with many expressing their hopes for a safe resolution.
Authorities emphasize the importance of safety in backcountry skiing, especially during severe weather conditions. They urge all adventurers to stay informed about avalanche risks and to follow safety protocols when venturing into the wilderness.
The search and rescue operation remains ongoing, with updates expected as conditions allow. Stay tuned for further developments on this breaking story.
