URGENT UPDATE: A devastating avalanche has struck a group of 15 skiers on a backcountry trip in the Sierra Nevada mountains near Frog Lake, California, leaving 9 individuals missing. The incident occurred on January 30, 2024, amidst severe winter storm conditions.

In the past 24 hours, the town of Soda Springs recorded over 30 inches (76 centimeters) of snowfall, contributing to dangerous and unstable snowpack conditions. Strong winds and rapid snow accumulation have made the terrain increasingly hazardous, prompting concerns among outdoor enthusiasts and safety officials.
