UPDATE: Amateur astrophotographer Tim Henderson has just unveiled a breathtaking trio of nebulae captured under the pristine skies of the Central Australian Desert. This stunning achievement showcases the Carina Nebula, NGC 6188, and Sh2-1, drawing attention from astronomy enthusiasts worldwide.
Henderson’s remarkable images, taken in late April and May 2025, reveal the colossal filaments of dust and gas that form NGC 6188, located approximately 4,000 light-years from Earth in the southern constellation Ara. The nebula’s intricate shapes have earned it the nickname “the Dragons of Ara,” appearing like dueling monsters in the night sky.
Utilizing a high-end astronomy camera and an Askar SQA55 scope, Henderson executed a total of 50 separate 240-second exposures to capture the dynamic beauty of these celestial formations. In his words, “The skies here have zero light pollution… and the nights are cloudless 90% of the time.” This perfect setting facilitated his astrophotography journey, which began just two years ago.
The Carina Nebula itself, situated 7,500 light-years from Earth, is a vast stellar nursery housing at least a dozen massive stars. NASA reports that these stars, each 50 to 100 times the mass of our sun, emit intense radiation that ionizes the surrounding gas, causing it to glow vividly. Henderson was thrilled to discover that his view of the Carina Nebula coincidentally resembled the outline of Australia.
Additionally, Henderson’s portrayal of Sh2-1, also known as Sharpless 1, showcases striking cloud-like structures nestled in the constellation Scorpius, near the bright star Pi Scorpii. His unique vantage point—at a small cabin on a remote wildlife station—grants him easy access to power and the internet, aiding in his astrophotography endeavors.
Henderson works nights, primarily focusing on nocturnal wildlife conservation, allowing him to set up his astrophotography rig efficiently. “I often schedule it to take photos until I get home,” he states.
