The Allen Red Devils secured a thrilling overtime victory against local rival Neosho Community College, winning 85-82 on March 6, 2024. Freshman guard Clyde Davis sealed the win with a dramatic three-pointer as time expired, completing a series sweep over the Panthers. This victory marks the Red Devils’ fourth consecutive win as they prepare for their upcoming game against the top-ranked, undefeated Johnson County Community College Cavaliers.

Trailing 46-31 at halftime, Allen faced a significant challenge after a strong first half by Neosho, highlighted by their impressive three-point shooting. Rather than allowing the home crowd to celebrate during the NCCC homecoming, the Red Devils mounted a comeback with a 42-27 run in the second half, forcing the game into overtime.

The second half began with scoring contributions from freshman guard Moses Stephenson, whose three-pointer along with free throws set the tone for the Red Devils. Freshman forward Derrick Cooper and Sheen Saunders also played pivotal roles, cutting Neosho’s lead to single digits. A crucial three-pointer by Jayson Demcher tied the game at 61-61, setting the stage for a fiercely competitive finish.

“We talked about being undefeated in overtime in the huddle and the guys said, ‘We got this. We’ve been here before,’” said Patrick Nee, head coach of the Red Devils.

In the overtime period, the teams continued to trade baskets. Allen gained an 82-77 lead, but Neosho rallied with a 5-0 run, temporarily shifting momentum back in their favor. However, they inadvertently gave the ball back to Allen with just 1.8 seconds left, allowing Davis to clinch the win.

Davis led the Red Devils with 19 points, five assists, and three steals. Demcher also stood out, finishing with a double-double of 18 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Both Saunders and freshman forward William Jordan contributed significantly, with Jordan scoring in double digits off the bench.

“We’re really starting to grow as a team,” Coach Nee remarked. “The ball is moving a little better and guys are pushing more in transition, and that’s where the dunks start happening. This just shows the consistency growing of this team, being all freshmen but three players. We think our best basketball is still to come.”

With this victory, the Red Devils improved their overall record to 16-9 and 6-3 in the Jayhawk Conference, currently sitting in second place behind JCCC, which holds a perfect record of 27-0 and 10-0 in conference play. Although mathematically it is impossible for Allen to catch up to JCCC, maintaining the second seed is crucial for their regional tournament seeding.

Looking ahead, Coach Nee expressed hope for a strong turnout from Allen fans during the upcoming Sophomore Night festivities. “Thanks to all the fans and students that came out. It was an amazing atmosphere, and I feel like it really helped our team late in regulation and overtime,” he said.

As the Red Devils prepare for their highly anticipated matchup against the Cavaliers, the excitement surrounding the team continues to build.
