URGENT UPDATE: Thoroughbred horse racing could be making a comeback in Alabama after a staggering 30 years of absence. As excitement builds, owners are rallying support ahead of the Magic City Classic Stakes, a significant race taking place this Friday at the New Orleans Fairgrounds Race Course, featuring an $85,000 purse.
The last thoroughbred race at the Birmingham Race Course was held in 1995, but recent developments indicate that the Alabama Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association is determined to revitalize the sport in the state. President David Harrington expressed optimism, stating, “We’re hoping to eventually return live thoroughbred racing to Alabama. We have the infrastructure to do so, and many parts of Alabama’s agricultural industry would benefit.”
The Birmingham Turf Club, which opened on March 4, 1987, initially attracted over 13,000 visitors on its first day. Despite its $85 million investment and impressive facilities, including a seven-story grandstand, the venue closed after just 175 days due to financial struggles. However, supporters argue that the infrastructure remains intact and could successfully support horse racing again.
After the sale of the Birmingham Race Course to Wind Creek, there is renewed hope. Wind Creek plans to transform the site into a premier entertainment destination, and association members believe horse racing could play a pivotal role in this vision. “Thoroughbred racing will add thousands of jobs and boost Alabama’s economy,” Harrington added.
As horse racing faces a decline nationwide, with over 40 tracks shuttering since 2000, Alabama’s push for revival mirrors recent successes in states like Kansas, Nebraska, and Virginia, where racing has seen revitalization. “I love promoting Alabama thoroughbreds,” said member Kent Gremmels, calling for the return of horses to their home state. “The one thing that would make it better is being able to bring our horses home and do it in the state where we live.”
While the Birmingham Race Course has been approached about the return of horse racing, no formal consideration has been made yet. With enthusiasm building around the Magic City Classic Stakes, all eyes will be on the developments following this weekend’s event.
