WhatsApp Web is experiencing significant issues as users report that the dark mode feature has suddenly stopped functioning. This problem follows a previous bug that left many unable to scroll through their chats. Complaints surfaced on October 15, 2023, with users expressing frustration over the bright white interface that replaced the preferred dark mode.

On Reddit, users described their surprise at encountering what one called a “flashbang” effect from the sudden brightness. Many expressed concern for their eyesight, with comments reflecting how jarring the bright screen was for those accustomed to using dark mode, especially during evening hours or in low-light environments.

Widespread Impact Across Browsers

The issue appears to affect various browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Edge. Users have attempted several common troubleshooting methods without success. Clearing cache and cookies, switching browsers, and checking system-wide dark mode settings have not resolved the issue, leaving many users in a state of frustration.

Some technical users on Reddit discovered a temporary workaround by manipulating browser developer tools. By changing the CSS class from “color-refresh” to “color-refresh-dark,” they were able to restore the dark theme manually. Although this solution is not user-friendly, it provides some relief from the glaring light interface.

For Chrome users, another temporary fix involves enabling “force dark mode” through the chrome://flags settings. While this solution offers a workaround, users have noted that it does not replicate the original dark mode experience accurately.

Possible Resolutions and User Experiences

Despite the ongoing issues, some Reddit users reported that the dark mode functionality seems to be returning for certain individuals. Additionally, an attempt to reproduce the bug on the Comet browser on a Mac yielded no issues; dark mode functioned as intended. This inconsistency suggests that the problem may be limited to specific configurations or user environments.

For those still grappling with the bright interface, users are encouraged to clear their browser cache once more or wait for a permanent fix from WhatsApp. As the situation develops, many are hopeful for a timely resolution to restore their preferred dark mode experience.
