Velotric has launched its first electric trike, the Triker, marking the company’s entry into the expanding e-trike market. This innovative vehicle aims to provide enhanced performance and technology tailored for a diverse range of riders, including seniors and those seeking a more stable alternative to traditional bicycles.
The Triker stands out with its thoughtful design and advanced features. At first glance, it resembles a comfortable cruiser with an additional wheel, yet it is equipped with a high-torque motor, smart sensors, and safety features that cater to both novice and experienced riders. According to Adam Zhang, CEO and co-founder of Velotric, “Triker is for the riders left behind in the e-bike movement. It’s about dignity, independence, and connection.”
Design and Performance Features
The Triker integrates a low step-through height of 370 mm (14.5 inches), making it accessible for riders with limited mobility. Its frame geometry and extended 680 mm (26 inches) seat-to-handlebar reach contribute to a comfortable riding posture. The adjustable 180° folding stem and 80mm hydraulic front suspension enhance stability and comfort, significantly improving the riding experience for users.
One of the most notable aspects of the Triker is its differential rear axle, which allows each rear wheel to rotate independently. This design enhances cornering stability, reducing the risk of tipping—an issue common with traditional trikes. Coupled with wide 3-inch tires and a low center of gravity, these features provide riders with a sense of control, even on uneven terrain.
Powering the Triker is a 90Nm high-torque motor, complemented by a 7-speed gear system and a thumb throttle for effortless acceleration. The motor delivers a peak output of 1,300W, making it significantly more powerful than many entry-level e-trikes. It is capable of climbing hills with a gradient of up to 15 degrees, roughly equivalent to a 27% hill grade.
Riders can select between cadence and torque sensor modes via a handlebar remote, enabling a customizable riding experience. The built-in cruise control feature allows users to maintain a steady speed, particularly beneficial on long rides.
Battery Life and Safety Features
The Triker is equipped with a 48V 16.75Ah battery, offering a substantial capacity of about 800 Wh. Velotric claims that this battery can support rides of up to 60 miles per charge, making it competitive within the e-trike segment.
Safety has not been overlooked in the Triker’s design. The vehicle meets UL2271 and UL2849 certifications, ensuring rigorous testing for electrical and fire safety. The battery boasts an IPX7 rating, confirming full water resistance, while the frame is rated IPX6, indicating it can withstand high-pressure water jets.
Additional safety features include hydraulic disc brakes with built-in parking brakes, a loud 100dB horn, ultra-bright integrated lights with rear turn signals, and compatibility with Apple Find My™ for theft tracking.
With a retail price of $2,399, the Triker is positioned in the upper range of the consumer trike market, yet it offers more advanced features than many competitors. It is available in three colors: Cherry Crimson, Pearl White, and Royal Blue, and can be pre-ordered through Velotric’s website, with expected shipping in early August 2023.
The Velotric Triker demonstrates a commitment to innovation, catering to a broad audience while addressing the specific needs of seniors and individuals with mobility challenges. Its combination of power, technology, and safety features positions it as a strong contender in the evolving e-trike landscape, appealing to anyone seeking a stable and comfortable riding experience.
