The Trump administration has announced the launch of a new initiative known as the “Tech Force,” aimed at accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) within the federal government. The initiative was unveiled by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) on December 2, 2025, and is designed to secure America’s technological leadership in the AI sector.

The Tech Force will recruit approximately 1,000 early-career professionals with technical expertise, including engineers and data scientists, who will be embedded within various federal agencies. This two-year program focuses on modernizing government infrastructure and enhancing service delivery through AI projects. OPM Director Scott Kupor emphasized the initiative as a “clarion call” for talented individuals to contribute to national efforts in AI.

“If you want to help your country lead in the age of AI, we need you,” Kupor stated in a release. The aim is to create career opportunities in both public service and the private sector, allowing participants to work on what are described as “mission-critical” projects.

Partnerships with Leading Tech Companies

As part of the initiative, the Tech Force will collaborate with around 25 major technology companies, including Amazon Web Services, Adobe, Dell Technologies, IBM, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Oracle. This partnership is expected to facilitate training and development opportunities for participants, who will be matched with positions across federal agencies.

The program not only seeks to fill the current talent gap in advanced technical skills but also aims to replenish the federal workforce, especially as retirements are projected to increase over the next decade. Kupor noted, “Our goal here is not to ask people to commit to a 40-year career in the federal government, but to show that there are opportunities for long-term tech careers tackling complex problems.”

Applications for the U.S. Tech Force are open at TechForce.gov, with an objective to complete the hiring process by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

Strategic AI Goals and Challenges

This initiative is part of President Trump’s broader AI strategy, which was detailed in the AI Action Plan launched in July. The plan includes measures to create federal regulations governing AI, aimed at addressing challenges posed by state-level regulations. Critics, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, have expressed concerns regarding the executive order’s ability to preempt state legislative action.

In addition to the Tech Force, the administration has authorized Nvidia to export some of its advanced AI chips, including the H200s, to China. This move is intended to position American AI technology as a global standard, although it raises questions about potential impacts on national security.

The Tech Force initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing the United States’ capabilities in AI and technology while addressing workforce needs in the federal sector. As the program unfolds, its success will hinge on attracting and retaining top talent to lead critical AI-driven projects.
