Tesla is moving forward with plans to expand its Robotaxi service area, having recently conducted tests in Bee Cave, Texas, located approximately 25 minutes from the current operational geofence. This follows the initial launch of the Robotaxi platform on June 22, 2025, during which Tesla has already doubled its geofence twice, growing it from 42 square miles to an impressive 80 square miles.
The latest expansion has introduced new neighborhoods and regions into the network, allowing driverless vehicles to transport passengers over a broader area. Reports indicate that Tesla is now preparing for another significant enlargement of its service zone, potentially increasing the coverage to over 150 square miles. This strategic move comes as competition from Waymo continues to intensify in the autonomous vehicle market.
Over the weekend, a Tesla enthusiast observed a Robotaxi validation vehicle conducting tests in Bee Cave, which is about 15 miles west of Austin’s current geofence boundary. The testing in this suburban area indicates Tesla’s commitment to laying the groundwork for future expansions.
Competition and Safety Priorities
Tesla has been actively testing its vehicles in the western suburbs of Austin, a move that aligns with its strategy to expand its geofence into new territories. The competition with Waymo has been particularly pronounced, with both companies accelerating their expansion efforts in recent months.
