Stellantis has issued a significant recall affecting approximately 320,000 Jeep plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) due to a serious fire risk linked to faulty battery cells. The recall encompasses multiple models, specifically the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, which have been identified as potentially hazardous because of issues with their lithium-ion battery packs.
According to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected battery packs might be “susceptible to separator damage.” This defect can lead to short circuits, resulting in thermal damage and the potential for fire. This is not the first occurrence of such a recall for Jeep; a similar situation arose in 2024, involving around 154,000 Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe models.
The current recall marks a considerable escalation, with the total number of affected vehicles growing significantly. Specifically, the recall includes 228,221 Wrangler 4xes manufactured between the 2020 and 2025 model years, along with 91,844 Grand Cherokee 4xe models produced from 2022 to 2026.
What Owners Need to Know
For current owners of the affected vehicles, it is important to note that Jeep has not yet developed a solution for this dangerous battery issue. As of now, the recommended course of action is not to take the vehicles in for service, as there is no available remedy. Stellantis plans to notify all owners of the impacted vehicles by December 2, 2025. An additional notification will follow once a fix has been identified.
In the meantime, Jeep is advising owners to take precautionary measures to mitigate potential risks. They recommend that owners park their vehicles outside and away from structures, such as homes or enclosed public parking spaces, to limit damage in the event of a battery fire. Furthermore, Jeep suggests that owners refrain from fully charging their vehicle’s battery, as depleted batteries are reportedly less likely to suffer from the damaging separator issue.
This recall underscores the ongoing challenges the automotive industry faces regarding the safety of electric and hybrid vehicles. As Jeep continues to address these concerns, owners are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety until a comprehensive solution is provided.
