Qualcomm has unveiled its latest battery charging technology, Quick Charge 5+, which promises enhanced power delivery for a range of devices. The new protocol intelligently adapts the power flow to the specific device being charged, increasing efficiency while aiming to preserve battery health.

The initial Quick Charge 5 technology, launched in 2020, enabled charging speeds of up to 50% in just five minutes, utilizing a maximum power output of 100W. Qualcomm claims this makes it the leading method for fast charging available for supported devices, including wall chargers, car chargers, and power banks. With the introduction of Quick Charge 5+, the company aims to further improve performance through smarter power management.

Enhanced Efficiency and Thermal Management

Qualcomm emphasizes that Quick Charge 5+ reduces heat generation by using lower voltage at higher currents, specifically up to 20V at 7A. This contrasts with many high-voltage charging solutions that tend to generate more heat, which can negatively affect battery longevity. The company’s approach is designed to ensure that performance remains uncompromised during charging, offering a balance of cost-effectiveness and efficiency.

“We are focused on delivering a charging experience that matches the needs of modern devices,” said a Qualcomm spokesperson. “By intelligently recognizing which device it’s connected to and dynamically controlling power flow, we enhance the user experience without compromising performance. Our reduced voltage methodology offers a more efficient solution compared to alternatives limited to 5A, which often rely on higher voltage to achieve similar wattage.”

Future Developments and Compatibility

The first mobile devices supporting Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 5+ technology are set to be revealed at the upcoming Snapdragon Summit 2025, scheduled for September 23-25, 2025. Alongside these devices, new charging accessories compatible with the Quick Charge 5+ protocol will also be launched later in the year.

Moreover, Quick Charge 5+ will maintain backward compatibility with previous generations of Quick Charge technology, ensuring that users can enjoy the benefits of the latest advancements without needing to replace their existing devices. This commitment to compatibility reflects Qualcomm’s dedication to enhancing user convenience and satisfaction in the fast-evolving landscape of mobile technology.
