The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has initiated a significant resurfacing project on state Route 93, also known as Broad Street. The work spans from 15th Street in West Hazleton to the border between Carbon and Luzerne counties, just outside the city limits of Hazleton. The total cost for the project is estimated at $3,796,370, with completion expected by November 2025, according to PennDOT’s construction map.
Details of the Resurfacing Project
Rich Roman, the District 4 Executive of PennDOT, provided insights into the project. “There are no detours, but some lane restrictions,” he noted. The work involves milling the existing pavement surface and laying down new asphalt. Additionally, drainage repairs and pipe replacements will be carried out as part of the resurfacing effort.
The contract for this work has been awarded to Pennsy Supply, based in Harrisburg, and will be financed through transportation funding allocated by the state. Crews are scheduled to begin resurfacing on August 26, 2025, specifically from the Banks Township line to Poplar Street in Hazleton.
Roman added, “Paving should be done this season; everything is weather-dependent. The latest update I received is that they started doing milling of the current surface and are working their way from the Carbon County line to the other end of the project.”
No Changes to Road Configuration
The ongoing work will maintain the current road configuration, meaning there will be no additional lanes or expansion of the roadway as part of this project. This resurfacing connects to an earlier paving project on state Route 93, which was completed several years ago and extended from 15th Street in West Hazleton into Sugarloaf Township.
The improvements to state Route 93 aim to enhance safety and driving conditions for the thousands of motorists who use this vital route daily. As the project progresses, PennDOT will keep the public informed about any developments and the expected timeline for completion.
