Nissan has unveiled significant updates to the Fairlady Z for the 2027 model year, enhancing both its design and mechanical features. The updated sports car was revealed at the Tokyo Auto Salon from January 9-11, 2026, showcasing a refreshed look and improved performance capabilities.
The most notable change is the introduction of a manual transmission option for the Nismo variant, a feature enthusiasts have long requested. Alongside this, Nissan has fine-tuned the engine’s electronic control unit (ECU) and throttle response, aiming to create a more engaging driving experience.
Stylistically, the Fairlady Z retains its iconic silhouette, but the front bumper has received a makeover. The previous vertical slits have been replaced with a more cohesive design, featuring a sculpted lower section and a body-colored crossbar that enhances the grille’s appearance. According to Nissan, these aerodynamic enhancements reduce front lift by 3.3% and drag by 1% compared to the outgoing model. The updates also include a new striking color option, Unryu Green, which draws inspiration from the classic S30 model’s Grand Prix Green.
The body retains most of its original panels, although the rear spoiler has been removed. The Nissan corporate badge has been replaced with a simpler Z emblem, and the alloy wheels now boast a bi-tone finish. The Nismo edition maintains its aggressive styling, featuring a distinct body kit with red accents, unique wheels, and a black interior finished in suede with red stitching.
Under the hood, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine remains unchanged, delivering 400 hp for the standard model and 420 hp for the Nismo. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic transmission. The introduction of the manual gearbox for the Nismo variant marks a significant shift, allowing drivers to enjoy a more hands-on experience.
Mechanically, the updated model features new monotube shock absorbers with a larger diameter, designed to improve ride quality across the entire range. The Nismo version also benefits from enhanced suspension tuning, striking a balance between performance and everyday usability. Additionally, it inherits stronger brakes originally developed for the now-retired R35 GT-R, further enhancing its performance capabilities.
The refreshed 2027 Fairlady Z is set to officially launch in Japan during the summer of 2026, although Nissan has not yet confirmed specific details for the US market. Enthusiasts can expect similar updates to be announced later this year.
As Nissan continues to evolve its iconic sports car, the 2027 Fairlady Z stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to performance and style, ensuring that it remains a compelling choice for enthusiasts around the world.
