A project enthusiast has created a custom compact RGB 14-segment display, filling a niche in the market for addressable LED components. The individual, known as EastMakes, faced a challenge in locating a suitable display featuring customizable colors. Unable to find an existing product, EastMakes took the initiative to design and produce a version using addressable SK6805 RGB LEDs.
This innovative display features a compact footprint of just 1.5 x 1.5 centimeters. The design process involved determining the layout for the individual LEDs on printed circuit boards (PCBs), which was accomplished using KiCad, a popular electronic design automation software. The manufacturing and assembly of the PCBs were relatively straightforward, but the critical aspect that enhances the display’s functionality is the diffuser.
Experimentation with Diffuser Designs
To achieve optimal brightness and visibility, EastMakes experimented with various diffuser approaches. One method involved using FR4 with translucent segments integrated into the solder mask, while another utilized a 3D-printed version made from both white and black PLA filament. The FR4 approach, which employed 0.8 mm thin PCBs, demonstrated promising results, especially with the addition of through vias in the 1 mm version, which significantly improved overall brightness.
The 3D-printed prototypes offered a different aesthetic, although EastMakes noted that adjustments to the diffuser panel would be beneficial. Specifically, the panel should fit snugly around the LEDs to minimize light bleeding between segments. This small design tweak could greatly enhance the visual clarity of the display.
