BYD is set to expand its electric vehicle lineup with the introduction of the new “Yuan Max” SUV, recently spotted in China ahead of its anticipated launch. The prototype was captured in testing, revealing a design reminiscent of the popular Yuan Plus model. This addition aims to fill a niche between the Yuan Plus and the larger Song Pro.
The spy images released by the Chinese online news outlet Autohome show that, despite heavy camouflage, the Yuan Max retains a familiar silhouette similar to the Yuan Plus, also known in international markets as the Atto 3. Notably, the C-Pillar appears elongated compared to the Yuan Plus, hinting at a larger interior space that may accommodate a third row of seating. For context, the Yuan Plus measures 4,455 mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,720 mm, whereas the Song Pro stretches to 4,735 mm with a wheelbase of 2,712 mm.
The new model is expected to carry the name Yuan Max, reinforcing its connection to BYD’s established Yuan series. Inside the vehicle, the steering wheel prominently features the Chinese character for “Yuan,” while the interior layout aligns closely with BYD’s existing models, showcasing a floating central infotainment screen and a compact driver display.
According to data from CnEVPost, BYD has reported over 393,000 Yuan vehicles sold in the first eleven months of 2023, which represents 9.4% of the company’s total sales. This highlights the Yuan series as one of BYD’s most successful offerings, complemented by the Yuan Up model. In international markets, these models are rebranded as the Atto 2 and Atto 3.
The Yuan Max is poised to become the largest variant within the Yuan series, bridging the gap between existing models and enhancing BYD’s electric SUV portfolio. This new addition follows recently announced plans for high-end flagship models, including the Seal 08 sedan and Sealion 08 SUV, which are slated for release in early 2026. These upcoming vehicles will feature BYD’s latest advancements in software and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS).
As BYD continues to innovate and expand its electric vehicle range, the Yuan Max is anticipated to attract a significant consumer base both domestically and internationally, marking another step in the company’s commitment to the electric vehicle market.
