MORGANTOWN — West Virginia University has added Memphis safety Kamari Wilson to its roster, marking the Mountaineers’ 11th acquisition from the transfer portal this season. This addition comes as part of head coach Rich Rodriguez‘s ongoing efforts to strengthen the team’s defensive lineup ahead of the 2026 season.
Wilson’s collegiate career has been marked by significant transitions. He began at the University of Florida, where he played for two seasons, participating in a total of 16 games. In his freshman year, he logged the highest number of snaps among true freshmen, totaling 311. During his time at Florida, he recorded 40 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and contributed with a pass breakup and a fumble recovery.
In 2024, Wilson transferred to Arizona State University, where he played a part in the team’s journey to the College Football Playoffs, appearing in 13 games. His performance included 11 tackles, six of which were solo, although his impact was limited compared to his earlier tenure.
Wilson’s next move took him to Memphis, where he made a notable comeback in 2025. He participated in every game, including a bowl match against North Carolina State, and achieved a total of 85 tackles, one sack, two forced fumbles, and one recovery. Additionally, he recorded two interceptions and four pass breakups, showcasing his ability to contribute to the defensive efforts.
As a former four-star recruit from IMG Academy, Wilson is now rated as a three-star safety in the transfer portal, positioned as the 94th-best safety, according to 247Sports. His experience and skills are expected to fill a crucial gap for the Mountaineers, especially as the program has seen several players leave through the transfer portal or graduate.
The addition of Wilson is particularly timely, given the recent departures in West Virginia’s secondary. His veteran presence on the field is anticipated to provide immediate reinforcement, enhancing the team under defensive coordinator Zac Alley. Wilson is seen as a “ballhawk,” a player who can significantly contribute to the team’s defensive turnover goals.
This recruitment aligns with Rodriguez’s strategy of blending experienced players into the roster, contrasting with his typical focus on younger talents.
