The Happy Valley Warriors marked the inaugural game on their newly installed artificial turf with a commanding victory over the Cloudland Highlanders, winning by a score of 55-20. The match showcased the Warriors’ offensive prowess, as they amassed a staggering total of nearly 400 yards, including 282 yards on the ground.
The Warriors wasted no time establishing dominance, with Lane Parker igniting the scoreboard early on with a remarkable 65-yard touchdown run on the first possession. This quick strike gave Happy Valley a 6-0 lead. Cloudland responded later in the first quarter when quarterback Bryce Birchfield executed a successful play-action pass, connecting with Walker Gouge for a 58-yard touchdown reception, leveling the score at 6-6.
However, the Warriors quickly regained control, methodically driving down the field before Keelin Releford powered in a 20-yard touchdown run, pushing the score to 13-6. The momentum shifted further when Parker intercepted a pass and raced for another touchdown, this time a striking 50-plus-yard run that extended the lead to 20-6.
Releford continued to shine, adding two more touchdowns, while Parker showcased his defensive skills with a second interception, which he returned 54 yards for a touchdown. By halftime, the score had ballooned to 55-6, with the Warriors firmly in control of the game.
“I like the way this bunch is coming together,” said Coach Jason Jarrett. “They do a lot of things together outside of football, and the more they do that the closer they will get. I think it shows on the field.”
Although the Highlanders struggled with the absence of key players Grayson Cole and Landon Barnette, they found some footing in the second half. Gavyn Shell scored on a 10-yard run, followed by Birchfield’s 2-yard touchdown keeper, bringing the score to 55-20. Shell finished the game with 79 rushing yards, leading Cloudland’s offense.
Parker concluded the night with an impressive 120 yards on just three carries, while Releford added another 83 yards to his tally. The overall performance positioned Happy Valley as a formidable contender in Region 2, with Coach Jarrett expressing optimism for the season ahead.
The new turf field, which Jarrett praised as “the best and most beautiful artificial turf in the area,” was made possible through the support of the Carter County School System. He expressed gratitude for the upgrades that enhance the athletic facilities.
Happy Valley’s record now stands at 2-0, with the team set to travel to Claiborne next week. Cloudland will enjoy a bye before facing Hancock County on September 12, 2023. As the season progresses, both teams will look to build on their performances and make their marks in the region.
