Virginia A. Wilson, a respected figure in her community, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, at her home in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Surrounded by her children, she departed this life having left a lasting legacy of faith and service.

Born on June 23, 1938, in Grand Forks, Virginia was the daughter of Maurice and Sophie (Reszka) Korynta. She married Merle Wilson on September 11, 1956, at St. Patrick’s Church in Minto, North Dakota. Virginia dedicated her life to her family and her church community, exemplifying her commitment as a domestic engineer. She found joy in preparing family meals, baking caramel rolls, and nurturing her garden.

A Life of Service and Faith

Virginia was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Church since 1956. Over the years, she contributed significantly to the parish as a liturgist, sacristan, and volunteer. Her roles included serving on the funeral committee and being an active member of the St. Mary’s Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. Those who knew her recognized Virginia as a pillar of strength and a true woman of faith.

Virginia’s family includes her children: Greg (Lori) Wilson of Sedona, AZ; Jeffrey (Carrie) Wilson, Janell (Dennis) Johnson, and Joanne Wilson, all of Grand Forks; and Colleen Wilson, daughter-in-law from Gilbert, AZ. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, with two more expected this winter. Her siblings include Daniel (Connie) Korynta, Ernie (Roxanne) Korynta of Grand Forks, Lenore (Ron) Houdek of Tolna, ND, and Jean Johnson of Tacoma, WA, along with several in-laws, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Wilson; her son, Randall Wilson; her brother-in-law, Don Johnson; sister-in-law, Barbara Korynta; and her parents.

Gratitude for Compassionate Care

The family wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to the medical team at the Altru Cancer Center, particularly Dr. Abdul Hannan, Kayla Clausen, and Dr. Josh Deere, for their compassionate care during Virginia’s illness. They also extend their thanks to all who supported Virginia and her family with prayers and kindness.

In honor of Virginia’s wishes, memorial contributions can be directed to the St. Mary’s Sanctuary Restoration Project at 216 Belmont Road, Grand Forks, ND 58201, or to Sacred Heart School at 200 3rd Street NW, East Grand Forks, MN 56721.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, from 16:00 to 18:00 at the Amundson Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Forks. A rosary and prayer service will commence at 18:00. Further visitation is scheduled for 10:00 on Monday, July 21, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks, with the Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00. Virginia will be laid to rest at the Memorial Park South Cemetery in Grand Forks.
