The Utah Utes made history on December 23, 2025, when quarterback Devon Dampier broke a 41-year-old school record for rushing yards in a season during the Las Vegas Bowl. With a 3-yard run in the second quarter, Dampier propelled the team past the previous record of 3,264 yards, originally set in 1984. That record was fueled by legendary performances from players like Eddie Johnson, who amassed 1,021 yards, and featured contributions from quarterback Mark Stevens and running backs Molonai Hola and Tony Cospy.
The Utes’ offensive resurgence in 2025 has been largely attributed to a formidable offensive line, which includes projected NFL talents Spencer Fano and Caleb Lomu, along with seasoned seniors Jaren Kump, Tanoa Togiai, and Michael Mokofisi. Former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham praised this group during the Big 12 media days, stating, “I can say with confidence, we should be the best offensive line since I’ve been at the University of Utah.”
The offensive line not only set the tone but also allowed the team to effectively utilize its dual-threat quarterback. Dampier finished the regular season with 687 rushing yards and seven touchdowns, including impressive performances against Arizona State and Kansas State. “Anytime you can wildcat or run the quarterback, you’re getting plus-one runs, which gives you a better chance,” said offensive coordinator Jason Beck.
In addition to Dampier, running back Wayshawn Parker emerged as a key player. After starting the season with a committee approach, Parker took on the primary role following a breakout game against Colorado, where he rushed for over 100 yards. He continued his momentum throughout the season, finishing with 931 yards and six touchdowns. Beck noted Parker’s contributions extend beyond rushing, as he has excelled in blocking, adding depth to the Utes’ offensive strategy.
Another standout in the running game was freshman Byrd Ficklin, who totaled 503 yards and ten touchdowns during the regular season. His versatility allowed the coaching staff to lighten the load on Dampier. Ficklin made significant contributions against Baylor and Kansas State, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure and gain the trust of his teammates.
Utah’s rushing prowess placed them second in the nation for average rushing yards per game, with a remarkable 269.8 yards per game. This performance surpassed even run-heavy service academies like Air Force and Army. The Utes’ success on the ground was a critical factor in their offensive turnaround this season, leading to multiple school records being broken.
In the Las Vegas Bowl, Dampier further solidified his legacy by scoring an 11-yard rushing touchdown, which marked the Utes’ 39 rushing touchdowns for the season, breaking the previous record of 38 set in 2022. This victory not only underscored the strength of Utah’s rushing attack but also highlighted the collective effort of the entire team.
As the Utes celebrate this historic achievement, the foundation laid by their offensive line and standout players positions them well for future success in upcoming seasons. The 2025 campaign has been a testament to the team’s dedication and talent, promising exciting prospects for Utah football.
