The Phoenix Suns have taken a significant step to enhance their roster by claiming former Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Goodwin off waivers. This move reunites the team with the four-year veteran, who previously played 40 games with the Suns during the 2023-24 season. The news was reported by ESPN‘s Shams Charania.
Goodwin, known for his defensive prowess, made a notable impact during his time with the Lakers last season, playing in 29 games. His gritty play style earned him recognition as one of the most effective players off the bench. However, after the Lakers signed Marcus Smart, Goodwin was waived to make room for new additions to the roster.
According to ESPN salary cap expert Bobby Marks, Goodwin joins the Suns on a contract worth $2.3 million, with only $25,000 guaranteed. The remainder of his contract will become guaranteed if he remains on the team past January 7, 2026. The financial implications of this move also mean that the $25,000 will come off the Lakers’ salary cap.
During his initial stint with Phoenix, Goodwin played a similar role to what he did with the Lakers, proving himself as a gritty, defensive guard. In his 40 games with the Suns, he averaged 5.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 0.6 steals in just 14.0 minutes per game. His shooting percentages included 38.9% from the field, 28.8% from three-point range, and 86.2% from the free-throw line.
Goodwin’s performance improved significantly after he signed a two-way deal with the Memphis Grizzlies later that season. Over 17 games, he averaged 10.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in 29.2 minutes per game. His ability to contribute in various aspects of the game makes him an appealing addition for first-year head coach Jordan Ott, who values defensive-minded players capable of running in transition.
Goodwin was also a favorite of JJ Redick, the Lakers’ head coach, who described him as a “banshee” alongside Dorian Finney-Smith and Jared Vanderbilt, highlighting their strong defensive identity when on the court together.
This acquisition is beneficial not only for the Suns, who are in a retooling phase, but also for the 26-year-old Goodwin, who seeks to extend his career in the league. Suns fans are likely to welcome him back warmly, as his previous tenure with the franchise showcased his ability to win over supporters through his relentless play.
The Suns continue to build a competitive team with players who embody the qualities of hustle and determination, essential for success in the upcoming season. Goodwin’s return may prove to be a pivotal move as the Suns strive to establish a strong, cohesive unit that can make a significant impact in the league.
