stefon-diggs-addresses-criminal-charges-amid-emotional-turmoil

Stefon Diggs, the star wide receiver for the New England Patriots, spoke publicly on Friday regarding the criminal charges he faces stemming from a December 2 incident involving a personal chef in Dedham, Massachusetts. This marked his first media appearance since the allegations became public. Diggs expressed that it has been “a very emotional time” for him and apologized for his recent absence from the press.

During a press conference in the Patriots’ locker room, Diggs stated that he could only address questions related to football due to the ongoing legal situation. “It’s definitely an open case so I can’t even say anything about it,” he remarked. The charges against him include felony strangulation or suffocation, as well as misdemeanor assault and battery, according to court documents.

Details of the Incident and Legal Response

According to a police report from Dedham, the personal chef claimed that she had been in an ongoing text message exchange with Diggs regarding money he allegedly owed her. The woman, who was employed as Diggs’ personal chef for the football season, reported that she was staying in a room at his home when the confrontation occurred.

The report indicates that during a discussion about the outstanding payment, tensions escalated. “She alleges that the male then smacked her across the face. She said that she tried to push him away,” the police reported. The chef further alleged that Diggs attempted to choke her using his elbow around her neck, causing her to struggle to breathe. Notably, the report mentioned that she did not provide photographic evidence of any injuries.

David Meier, Diggs’ attorney, firmly denied the allegations, stating, “Stefon Diggs categorically denies these allegations. They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated — because they did not occur.” He suggested that the allegations stem from a financial dispute between an employer and employee. “The timing and motivation for making the allegations is crystal clear,” Meier added, asserting Diggs’ eagerness to resolve the matter in court.

Upcoming Legal Proceedings and Team Support

Diggs is scheduled for arraignment on January 23, 2024, just two days before the AFC Championship Game. The Patriots, who hold a record of 13-3, are set to face the Miami Dolphins in their final regular-season game, with an opportunity to secure the top seed in the AFC playoffs depending on the outcome of that match and the performance of the Denver Broncos.

The Patriots organization has publicly expressed its support for Diggs during this challenging time. In a statement, the team affirmed their backing, emphasizing that they stand by their player as he navigates these serious allegations. As the situation develops, both Diggs and the Patriots will be focused on the upcoming game while addressing the unfolding legal issues.
