
In a highly competitive nonleague matchup, Soquel High’s boys water polo team secured a convincing 14-9 victory against Junipero Serra on Friday. The Knights, currently ranked No. 3 in the Central Coast Section by maxpreps.com, showcased their strength with a dominant first half, leading 9-5 at the break.
Senior standout Stryder Stelck led the charge for Soquel, scoring six goals, along with contributing two assists and two steals. Fellow senior Tanner Connors supported the effort with three goals, one assist, and two steals, while junior Gabriel Suarez-Abraham added two goals, two assists, and two steals.
The Knights’ defensive game was equally impressive, finishing with a total of 17 steals, aided by junior goalie Rafael Suarez-Abraham, who made nine saves. Soquel’s next challenge will be against the No. 7 Santa Cruz team on October 11, 2023, where they will compete for supremacy in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League.
Strong Performances Across Other Sports
In girls volleyball, the Harbor Pirates achieved a significant victory over Mercy (Burlingame) with a clean sweep of 3-0. Junior outside hitter Cecile Novembre played a crucial role, recording 11 kills and five digs. Junior setter Gianna Fanara also shone, making 31 assists and two aces.
As the Harbor Tournament continues, the Pirates (17-9) are set to face Santa Cruz at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, following the semifinals in both Gold and Silver Divisions, which will take place earlier that day.
In flag football, the Aptos Mariners triumphed over PCS with a score of 37-12. Senior quarterback Ella Porter was instrumental, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for two more. The team will face Scotts Valley in a make-up game on October 10, 2023.
On the women’s volleyball front, Cabrillo College’s Seahawks secured their twelfth sweep of the season, defeating Gavilan 3-0. The Seahawks have now won 11 of their last 12 matches, solidifying their position in the Coast Conference North Division.
