The Siena Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs are taking decisive action against food insecurity in the Capital Region by hosting their annual food drive during two upcoming home games. This initiative, in partnership with the Regional Food Bank, invites fans to contribute by donating five canned goods during the matches against Merrimack on January 9 and 10, 2025.

The men’s team will compete against the Warriors on Friday, January 9, at 19:00 at MVP Arena, while the women’s team will play on Saturday, January 10, at 14:00 at the UHY Center on the Loudonville campus. In appreciation for their donations, fans will receive a voucher for $5 off a ticket to a future regular season home game for either team in the 2025-26 season, subject to availability.

According to John D’Argenio, Vice President and Director of Athletics at Siena University, “We value the opportunity to make a difference throughout the Capital Region by assisting our friends at the Regional Food Bank.” He highlighted the consistent support from Siena fans, who embody Franciscan values through community service. The drive aims to bolster the mission of the Regional Food Bank while encouraging fans to cheer for their teams.

The Regional Food Bank will collect donations, including canned goods and personal hygiene products, until the start of the second half of each game. Representatives will be stationed in the MVP lobby Atrium and on the concourse between sections 104 and 105, as well as in the lobby of the UHY Center. The organization is particularly focused on collecting healthy staples such as soup, cereal, oatmeal, and 100% juice, along with personal hygiene items like shampoo, soap, and bathroom tissue. Culturally responsive foods, including beans, rice, and masa flour, are also welcomed.

Fans who wish to support the cause monetarily can make contributions through Venmo. For every $1 donated, the Regional Food Bank can provide four meals to individuals in need across 23 counties in Northeastern New York.

Tom Nardacci, CEO of the Regional Food Bank, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership with Siena Athletics, stating, “We are excited to partner with Siena Athletics, a relationship which has always been pivotal in our fight against hunger within the community.” He extended gratitude to the athletes, coaches, and fans for their ongoing support, emphasizing the impact this collaboration has on neighbors facing food insecurity.

Founded in 1982, the Regional Food Bank is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to combating food insecurity in local communities. It collects donated food from the food industry and distributes it to nearly 1,000 charitable agencies working to feed the hungry across its service area. The Regional Food Bank is also a member of Feeding America, the national network of food banks.
