Trey White, a standout edge rusher for San Diego State University, has announced his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal. This move marks a significant change for the player, who had previously opted to remain with his hometown team, wrestling with the choice between loyalty and potential financial rewards from a higher-profile program.
A native of San Diego, White played his high school football at Eastlake High School. During his time at SDSU, he became a key player, contributing to the team’s success with a record of 9-4 in the 2025 season, a notable improvement from a 3-9 record in 2024. His decision to stay last year was motivated by a desire to address what he termed “unfinished business” with the Aztecs.
Nevertheless, the allure of a lucrative contract from a Power Five program proved too compelling for White this year. He confirmed on Thursday that he will pursue opportunities that could yield a financial package exceeding $1.5 million. White stated, “Coming to SDSU was the best decision I’ve ever made. I’ve created life-long relationships and bonds with not only my teammates and coaches but with the community as well. I will always be an Aztec for Life. I’m hoping to improve and compete at the highest level.”
White’s decision comes as nearly two dozen of his teammates also enter the transfer portal, which officially opens on April 15, 2026. His departure raises concerns regarding the retention of key players following the recent season. SDSU’s budget for player compensation in the upcoming season is $6 million, making it impossible for the program to allocate a significant portion to one athlete.
Over the past two seasons, White has established himself as a formidable player, earning first-team all-Mountain West honors twice. He recorded 19.5 sacks, 29 tackles for loss, and 27 quarterback hurries. His impressive performance in 2024 tied him for fifth in the nation with 12.5 sacks and seventh in tackles for loss with 18.5.
As the transfer portal opens, many within the SDSU community speculate on the possible impact of these changes.
