Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin has announced that he is taking a personal leave of absence to return home to Sweden for a family matter. The news was confirmed by Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff on Friday. While the timeline for Dahlin’s return remains uncertain, Ruff noted that Dahlin reassured him, saying, “everything is okay.”

Dahlin’s leave follows a challenging period for him and his family. Earlier this year, he revealed that his fiancée, Carolina Matovac, required a lifesaving heart transplant after suffering heart failure during a vacation in France. Matovac is currently recovering in Sweden.

Team Support and Challenges

Ruff expressed deep empathy for Dahlin’s situation, stating, “I don’t think you can describe it, and I don’t think you can feel what he’s feeling.” He emphasized that no one would want to experience what Dahlin has faced, underscoring the broader implications of the situation: “This is larger than hockey.”

The Sabres organization has rallied around Dahlin, offering their full support. Teammates and staff alike have acknowledged the emotional weight of his circumstances. The captain’s priority at this time is clearly focused on family matters, as he navigates these personal challenges.

Dahlin, who was the first overall pick in the 2018 National Hockey League Draft, is currently in his eighth season with the Sabres. His talent has been recognized on a larger stage; he is set to represent his native Sweden at the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Italy.

As Dahlin takes this time away from the ice, the Sabres and their fans remain hopeful for a smooth resolution to his personal issues, allowing him to return to the sport he loves when he is ready.
